That Dot

Did you miss me?

I am that dot.

The one your eye keeps finding
even when you’re trying
not to look.

There are dots everywhere.

And then there’s me.

A little off.

Not where I belong.
Not part of the plan.

Maybe that’s why
you keep noticing me.

Maybe that’s why
you keep coming back.

I am not the pattern.

I am the flaw
your eye keeps returning to.

The thing you tell yourself
doesn’t matter.

The thing you think about
anyway.

I am that dot.

The one you keep trying
to look away from.

The one that stays
after you do.

You may well break the accepted and expected patterns. But maybe, just maybe, the flaw lies in conformity, in the pattern itself, and “that dot” is precisely where, and as, it should be. Maybe that is why you are memorable.

I really love this. There’s something so comforting in the idea that maybe we were never meant to fit perfectly into the pattern in the first place. Maybe the things that make us different—the parts we sometimes question or try to soften—are exactly the parts that make us unforgettable.

And maybe “that dot” isn’t out of place at all. Maybe it’s exactly where it belongs.
